Art therapy offers a unique pathway to mental health support, especially for individuals who find traditional talk therapy confronting or inaccessible. At Through the Woods Counselling, we provide art therapy as part of our registered NDIS counselling services. This approach is particularly effective for clients with autism, intellectual disabilities, communication difficulties, or trauma histories.
Unlike recreational art classes, art therapy sessions are structured, goal-oriented, and facilitated by qualified counsellors with training in expressive therapies. The creative process becomes a medium through which clients can explore emotions, process trauma, build self-esteem, and enhance communication skills. Our participants often report a sense of calm, enjoyment, and self-discovery through these sessions.
Art therapy is an evidence-based approach that can support clients in areas such as emotional regulation, sensory integration, identity formation, and behaviour management. We tailor sessions according to each individual’s NDIS goals and include techniques such as visual journaling, guided painting, sculpting, and creative storytelling.
Sessions can take place at our Cowandilla studio, at the client’s home, or online. All materials are included and chosen to suit the client’s physical and sensory preferences. For those with mobility or sensory needs, we modify the tools and processes accordingly.
Case Study: James, a 17-year-old NDIS participant with ASD and non-verbal communication, participated in fortnightly art therapy. Over time, he began using colours and symbols to express his mood and needs, which significantly improved his communication with carers and his emotional wellbeing.
We provide progress reports, goal tracking updates, and can attend care team meetings to ensure alignment with other therapeutic supports. Art therapy is funded under Improved Daily Living, and we assist with justifications for inclusion in plans.
Referrers are encouraged to contact us to explore if art therapy is a good fit for a participant’s needs and goals. We are happy to provide sample programs and service proposals tailored to individual plans.
