The psychological benefits of group art therapy for seniors go far beyond creative expression. It offers an avenue for older adults to re-engage with themselves and others in a meaningful way. At Through the Woods Counselling, our group art therapy programs are grounded in therapeutic principles and delivered with compassion and flexibility.
Each session is structured to provide both emotional and cognitive benefits. By participating in group creative processes—such as painting, clay work, or collage—residents strengthen their fine motor skills, exercise decision-making, and experience sensory stimulation. Sessions are adaptable and inclusive, welcoming those with cognitive decline, mobility restrictions, or varying levels of engagement.
Social interaction is a core element of our group sessions. Many seniors face loneliness due to loss or relocation, and group art therapy offers a safe and engaging context to meet others, share stories, and feel less isolated. Themes explored in sessions often include memory, identity, resilience, and legacy.
Our team works closely with lifestyle and care staff to tailor content. We accommodate up to 10–12 participants per session and provide all materials. Sessions typically run for 60–90 minutes, and we handle all setup and clean-up.
Feedback from facilities consistently highlights increased resident engagement, reduced behavioural symptoms in residents with dementia, and enhanced mood and interaction for several days following a session. One facility manager noted that “our residents come alive during these art therapy sessions—they laugh, they create, they reminisce.”
We also offer ongoing training for staff interested in incorporating creative elements into their own programs between sessions.
Whether for a special themed month (e.g. Mental Health Week, Dementia Awareness Month) or as a regular program, group art therapy supports aged care quality indicators by enhancing psychosocial care and overall wellbeing.
