As Australians live longer, the emotional and psychological needs of older adults are increasingly recognised as integral to aged care. Seniors face unique stressors—bereavement, chronic illness, mobility decline, loss of independence, and transitions in housing. These experiences can compound over time, affecting mental health.
Through the Woods Counselling offers professional counselling specifically designed for older clients. Our services are accessible, empathetic, and clinically sound. We offer support in-home, in residential aged care, or via telehealth, ensuring no client is excluded based on mobility, cognitive function, or living arrangement.
Our counsellors bring both aged care experience and therapeutic training to each session. We use a person-centred, strength-based approach, helping seniors feel heard and validated while encouraging agency and self-reflection. Topics frequently explored include unresolved grief, anxiety, depression, family dynamics, and fear of future loss.
Seniors often carry a wealth of untold stories and complex emotional experiences. Our sessions offer space to reflect on one’s life journey, process regrets, celebrate resilience, and prepare for end-of-life in a dignified way. Clients often express relief in having a non-judgemental listener outside of their immediate family or care team.
We collaborate with families and aged care providers (where appropriate) to ensure continuity of care. Our documentation can be shared with case managers and GPs to support broader health goals.
Case Example: Margaret, 82, was referred to us following a hospital stay that left her with limited mobility. She reported sadness, disconnection, and “feeling like a burden.” Over 10 sessions, Margaret explored her grief, found new ways to maintain connection with her grandchildren, and regained confidence in asking for support from her care team.
We recommend fortnightly or monthly sessions for aged care clients, with flexible scheduling to accommodate other health appointments. All sessions are compliant with aged care service standards and can be integrated into a Home Care Package or Support at Home budget.
